Minister’s Suggestions

Dear Friend,

In the Redemptorist tradition the “Minister” was responsible for the material welfare of the individual monasteries. Below are listed live links to actual products of which the monastery is in need, and which we humbly propose to your consideration. This list is regularly updated.

If you do your shopping online, would you consider supporting us by using "Give as you live"?  You can support us most anywhere you shop online by signing up at Give as you Live. This company offers a service whereby they donate to your preferred Charity at no extra cost to you whenever you make your ordinary online purchases!

Our Most Urgent Need

DIESEL & KEROSENE (for boat, generator and heating)

The laborious task of decanting fuel into the Monastery tanks

Of all our concerns this is the greatest, as being completely off grid and off-shore, we rely on these two fuels for most everything. Our Mother of Perpetual Succour has a special oil lamp which burns on all feastdays for this intention and for your intentions who help us. We confide this to your kindness.

We recognise that times are difficult for everyone. If you are in a position to help us pay for this crucial element of our existence, please make a donation using the options below (click here), and mark the reference/intention as "fuel".

Thank you!

Note from the Minister

We have been so grateful to all of you who have so generously helped us in the past few months. Thank you so much, may God reward you very abundantly! I have updated the page now after a stocktake to reflect things we are most in need of at present..

Sanctuary Lamps

At present five lamps burn here day and night. We purchase those lights (a box of 20 Nine Day Lamps) through Hayes and Finch here.
If you would like to order these for the monastery, the intention they burn for as they are used will be yours.

Please enter our details in the delivery details (see bottom of page).

Toilet Paper

That most unflattering of products is unfortunately a recurring need. Our monastery statisticians and quality controllers have explored the depth of quality, roll number and sheet counts and have come up with some rather interesting conclusions. "Science" says that this product from Amazon is the best both for price and quality, coming out at 0.135p per sheet... with free shipping offered! Please may we recommend this lowly product to your kindness. The link is here.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Columbian Coal

We burn the fossil fuel coal in addition to drift and scrap wood on our fires. It is possible to order coal for the Monastery through our supplier at “Orkney Aggregates Limited” here.

One needs to buy 4 bags to get delivery (4 bags=£66.) A single 25kg bag costs £16.50. There is a discount for more than five bags. One can also purchase a “Pallet” which is a tonne of coal and is a much cheaper method. Forty bags (a pallet/tonne) costs £440 (that is £11 per bag).

If you were to be so kind as to help us here please use the “Delivery” option, for “Location” say “Kirkwall & St Ola (Friday)” and for the date just choose the closest one. This delivers to the haulage depot and Aggregates knows that any order for us ships to the haulage yard and will get to the monastery. At checkout please be sure to mention us “Golgotha Monastery - Papa Stronsay” in the “Additional information” Order notes so that they can put our name on the order.

To purchase the tonne of coal at the special discount price please contact orders99@orkagg.co.uk directly.

Olive Oil - Our store is low at present.

Olive oil is needed in the monastery both for our food and for sacramental use. May we suggest “Lyrakis Family Olive Oil Extra VirginCold Pressed from Crete, 5 Litre tin here.

The Lyrakis Estates encompass various parts of the terrain of north-eastern Crete in Sissi and in Kera from whence the Mother of Perpetual Succour came to Rome in 1499. Hence, amazingly, this is in fact oil from Our Lady’s “back-yard”.

Thank you so much!

Thank you!

Fons Olei

Fons Olei - fount of oil - on Papa Stronsay

Mater Dei, Mater Mei, esto nobis Fons Olei!

On Saturdays and Feasts of Our Lady an oil lamp burns during the waking hours before Our Mother of Perpetual Succour at our oil container in the Monastery Refectory, that she will watch over all our olive oil and fuel needs: oil, paraffin, kerosene, diesel, candles and sanctuary lamps, petrol and electricity. The lamp also burns for the intention of those who have helped us with any of those needs and tanks.

It also burns for the Lyrakis family and their estates.

All the oil that we use is blessed when it is received. Our oil container draws its name from the miraculous fountain of oil that sprung forth at the site of the present Roman Basilica of S. Maria in Travestere, and is said by St Jerome to have been a foreshadowing of the birth of Our Lord: “At the Meritoria tavern in Trastevere oil gushed from the earth all day without interruption, signifying the grace of Christ that would come to the people”.

Sugar - for cooking and preserving.

25 Kg bag available from Amazon here.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Salt - for cooking and preserving.

Both of these options seem to be well priced. If you know of better options, any salt is useful.

5 Kg bag of Fine White Salt is available from Amazon here.

25 Kg bag of Himalayan Coarse Salt is available from Amazon here.

Porridge Rolled Oats

12.5 Kg bag available from Amazon here.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Tea

5 Kg bag of traditional loose tea available from Amazon here. Seems most competitive price and product.

Coffee

1Kg coffee beans available from Amazon here or here

Any other kind of coffee is appreciated!

It is also possible, if you wish, to set up such products to deliver monthly.

Thank you!

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Butter

10 kg box of 40 blocks is available from Amazon here. This product has doubled its price in the past 3 years but we use it to avoid canola, carcogens, bovaer, and all the other poisons one finds in such products. If you know a better option, any safe butter is much appreciated.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Washing Powder

6.25 kg box of powder seems to be the most economical and is available from Amazon here.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

White Vinegar - for cooking and preserving.

10 litre option is available from Amazon here.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Kitchen Taps

Our kitchen taps are used constantly during the day and after five years are only just holding together. One frequently will not turn off, etc. Please may we recommend these taps to your charity. We would need four units in all for four sinks. Thank you very much! These taps on Screwfix seem to be a good option.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Printer Toner

We would be very grateful for your assistance in printing formation materials, letters, booklets and other documents in the monastery.

If you would like to donate toner for our printer we would be most grateful;  you can find it here.

A smaller and less expensive toner cartridge can be found here.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Tea Towels, Hand Towels and Pillow Cases

Ours are very old and worn now and get constant use. Frankly it is very difficult to find such online, nearly all the tea towels, even if they say they are linen, hardly dry. If a benefactor knows of a source this would be very much appreciated. Likewise any available standard dark coloured pillow cases would be a boon. Amazon has this basic handtowel here.

Please use our delivery address which you can find here.

Larger Item: Gas Oven

Our Gas Cookers are used more or less all day long. Please may we recommend the need of another one to you. This cooker seems to be good and similar to what we are using now. If you were so kind as to help us here, please do enter our address (below) because they are also charging shipping on this and because we live in Orkney usually this is not the same as elsewhere. Thank you very much!! The oven may be seen here:

If you have a better alternative, any similar gas oven would be very much appreciated indeed.

Shoes, Socks, and Gum Boots

These are a difficult purchase as they are usually expensive and of varying actual qualities. On the whole monks are in need of shoes, for a usual UK size range of 8 to 12.

This is a solid better daily shoe.

These are good for daily wear and also solid shoes (by experience).

Gum Boots are also a must for working on the island and are needed, also in a range of sizes UK 8 to 12.

These are a few pairs: Dunlop. Amblers. Half calves.

There are many other options, perhaps better in price or durability. We are grateful for anything, but always best in black.

This seems a good economical men's sock: here

Please enter our details in the delivery details (see bottom of page).
Thank you!

Cement

If you would like to help with this it is best to contact Orkney Aggregates.
Any ordinary cement in plastic bags (paper is enormously wasteful in Orkney) is extremely helpful to us.

Candles

St Joseph, come to our aid!

As in any church, Candles are constantly needed.  Please consider supporting the Divine Worship on Papa Stronsay with the purchase of some candles, which will burn of the intentions of those who have provided them.

The candles we use are of a specific size. The candles we use are the 3/4" Ivory, and in the drop-down next to it select the length as 12". The link takes you to the page for the 25% beeswax candles, which are the ones we use.

You can place an order for candles here.

Thank you!

Food Grade Storage Barrels

We are having problems with the storage of some supplies, our climate is very damp and there are "predators" in various shapes and sizes.

Many of our storage boxes have likewise perished with age and use.

Please may we request your help with any of these containers:

220 Litre Barrel here. This link seems the most competitive price for item and postage.

120 Litre Barrel (comes as two barrels), here.

Plastic liners for these barrels: larger here, smaller here. Or from Ebay

10 litre plastic storage box (comes as six boxes), here.

Scoops

We are in need of several of these scoops: slightly smaller here. and bigger, here.

Second Hand Diesel Car

Perhaps you have a second hand diesel car that is still up to long distances. We only have a van which caters for our shopping and transportation needs. Every now and again some confreres would like very much to be able to make a pilgrimage to some Holy Places and for such an occasion a 5 seater, ordinary vehicle would be very much appreciated. It is a big and rather unusual item to put up on the Benefactor's Page, but perhaps you have been inspired about this already, or perhaps you have such a car that is of no use to you. If you could help please contact us at: golgothamonastery@gmail.com

Mass Stipends: Please Note!

We CANNOT receive Mass Stipends sent to these two accounts.
Please do not deposit funds in either our “Golgotha” Clydesdale or our “Golgotha” Paypal account with a note for Masses, or email that you have done this, as this causes great complexity with our accounts. Please rather use this link, which is for our Congregation as a whole: https://papastronsay.com/donate/

Thank you so much for your understanding!

Thank you!

We try to respond as soon as we can and thank everybody who so kindly offers us their help through this page. But some of you are extremely generous and send us parcels on which there is no source, and for which we cannot thank you (and also cannot thank you enough).

Please be assured of our lowly prayers for you. Our Rule gives us the duty of praying the Litany of Loretto for benefactors every day before lunch, and we do this in a special way, saying not “Pray for us”, but “Pray for them”! Every invocation is prayed for yourselves.

If you have been one of those kind souls who have sent us a gift for the sake of Christ, thank you, may the King of Heaven reward you as only He knows how.

Monastery Helpers

Monastery Helpers are a dedicated group who help the monastery in various ways and who keep in contact by email. They work in the quiet of their own homes as and when they have a spare moment. Over the years so many kind people have helped in so many ways, especially with our printing apostolates. At the present there is a need of help with processing texts of old books which are being digitised. Of course there is OCR but taking an old volume that has not seen the light of day for decades and giving it new life is a bit more of a process. Usually we would do it chapter by chapter, recognise or type out the text (which is some cases is about the same amount of work if it does not recognise well), fix the line returns, errors, etc, check this. Then the books are put together, standardised and proofread. The work is rewarding in the sense that one gets to read and transcribe holy things. It is mortifying in the sense that is quite time consuming and one may only be working on a random chapter. One can do a chapter or a book, as one is inspired. All that is required is a certain attention to detail and a computer. If you would like to help with any of this, please write to us at golgothamonastery@gmail.com.

Papa Stronsay Pictures is designed to enable you to download beautiful Catholic Holy Pictures at a size and quality which can be turned into large glossy prints. They are also a way thank you for your kindness to the monastery.

Images are displayed below with a note telling you the size the image may be printed at for glossy high quality results. To obtain an image simply click the one you want in order to activate a download to your computer. Take this image to a printer and have the picture printed out. Ask a priest to bless the image.

Venerating and displaying Catholic Holy Images brings piety, happiness, holiness, and at length, please God, salvation to a home or work place.  Many thousands of holy Martyrs have died in their defense. The pictures are here for you, please feel free to use them for any pious purpose you wish.
